Obituary for Dennis Bruce "Denny" Douglass

Dennis Bruce Douglass, 75, of Harrison, a man who lived by the motto, “Do as I Say, Not as I Do,” died Sunday, January 6, 2019 in Detroit. Denny was born November 7, 1943 in Detroit, the son of Robert and Naomi (Robinson) Douglass. Growing up in Royal Oak, he loved fast cars and motorcycles, especially his first, the 1960 Corvette. As a teenager, he was a member of the Cavalier’s Car Club. He graduated from Royal Oak Dondero High School and opened two gas stations in the area while working tool and die in Clawson. Dennis married Karen Scrimger on February 1, 1964 in Berkley, MI. In 1968, the two moved north to Harrison to start their family. Denny worked as a mechanic at McGuire Chevrolet of Clare, Weldon’s Transit Mix of Harrison, and then construction, eventually starting D&M Construction.
In 1981, on their wedding anniversary, Denny came home and announced, to Karen’s dismay, that he had purchased a restaurant that day. He rebuilt the place into the Remedy Restaurant in 1984, and operated it alongside Karen until its closure in 2013. For years, Remedy fans enjoyed Denny’s famous wet burritos and Karen’s secret sauce on the Remedy Burger, which was voted best burger in Clare County. He was often known to dole out chocolate pudding from the Remedy salad bar to unsuspecting children, much to their delight. Denny and Karen worked hard together to do what they loved best, bringing people together with good food. At home, Denny loved creating new recipes, many of which he shared on social media.
Denny volunteered many hours and talents to the Harrison community. He served on City Council from 1990-1994 and the Clare County Transit Board from 1987 until 2000. He was instrumental in the construction of the fairgrounds family restrooms and supported 4H and school activities to a high level. He had a soft spot for kids, even if it meant casting the winning bid only to return the animal to the seller. He supported Ducks Unlimited, and loved Harley Davidson motorcycles. Denny was a die-hard member of the Liberty Riders M/C and enjoyed cooking for his club brothers on weekends.
Denny was a collector of treasures. He loved finding and restoring everything from fixer-up cars to commercial kitchen equipment. He loved bargain hunting on Repo-Cast and had a penchant for shopping. His thoughtful nature meant he always took care of his family and friends with meaningful gifts, a helping hand (especially with a power washer), and a devious laugh.
He will be missed and remembered by many, especially his wife of nearly 55 years, Karen Douglass; daughters, Dana (Tyler) Pray of Charlotte, MI, and Kami Krchmar of Harrison; grandchildren, Dustin (Elise Kindermann) Douglass of Houghton, MI, Kourtney Krchmar of Harrison, J. Anders Pray of Charlotte, and a Pray grandson expected in February; sister, Denise Douglass of Onalaska, WI; and many cousins, brothers-and-sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews; and his canine companion, Daisy. He is predeceased by his parents and his beloved dogs, Rigger and Romo.
A Celebration Gathering will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Stocking Funeral Home in Harrison. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the Patriot Guard Riders. The family wishes to thank those who helped the family visit Denny during his illness, especially Rob, Lisa, Karen, and Linda.
