Bert was my great uncle and he sure was great! I don't think we spent a ton of time with his family when I was young, but I have many memories from the time we did spend there. Once there was a hail storm and all of us kids were told to come inside, or at least up on the porch. I remember crying because the dog was still out in the hail, so Uncle Bert ran out and got him up on the porch with us. I remember seeing him butcher a couple chickens for dinner and learning what it meant when someone talk about someone running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I remember burying turtle eggs in the flower bed and hoping they'd all hatch ( I never found out if they did.) and lastly, his house was where I learned to ride a two wheeled bike. I got on the bike at the top of the hill and Mandy gave me a push. Fortunately for me I balanced all the way down and didn't crash, which bolstered my confidence to try it again. Once my own dad passed away we lost touch with most of his side of the family. Facebook reunited us again a few years ago. The first time I saw Uncle Bert as an adult I had to hold back tears because he looked so much like his sister Bertha, my grandma Bair, who has passed years before.
Even though I haven't had much time to visit, I am so thankful for reconnecting with those I once knew, and for being able to meet even more family I never knew I had.
