Kevin Michael Smith 68 of Harrison passed away suddenly at his home on Monday, March 23, 2020.
Kevin was born November 26, 1951 in Saginaw, Michigan the son of Charles James Smith and Mary Catherine “Kate” (Lavigne) Smith. Kevin was united in marriage to Christine (Crimmins) Smith on June 9, 1978 in Saginaw. Kevin and Christine relocated to Sterling Heights, Michigan in 1979 where they started their family, first welcoming a daughter, Caitlin on March 3, 1982 and later a son, Aaron on May 26, 1983.
Kevin was a proud graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 1979. He took his education very seriously and never stopped learning throughout his life. He was grateful for his education and the doors it opened for him.
Kevin worked for General Motors at their corporate headquarters in Detroit for 27 years, retiring in 2008 before quickly returning to work as a Senior Vice President of Strategic Programs for Sandler & Travis Trade Advisory Services in Farmington Hills until his permanent retirement in 2014. During his career at GM, Kevin rose the corporate ladder, ultimately becoming General Director of Global Customs – traveling the world and becoming a renowned expert in the international trade community.
Though he had a distinguished career with many accolades, his favorite job of all was being a Grampa and self-appointed head of nonsense and foolishness.
After having a second home on Budd Lake in Harrison, Michigan for 17 years, he and his wife Christine moved permanently to their lake house upon retirement. Never one to sit idly by, Kevin got actively involved in his community; through Meals on Wheels and the Harrison Chamber of Commerce, his church St. Athanasius Parish; as President of the Pastoral Council and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and his lake; as President of the Budd Lake Association from 2011 until the time of his passing.
Kevin was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing – or anything else that got him outdoors and in nature. The thing he enjoyed most about those activities was how they brought him closer to his family and friends. He proudly attended the same family deer camp he started with his brother Tim for over 50 years.
Kevin enjoyed sports, both playing in his early years, leading to many life-long friendships with some of his teammates, and later rooting for his favorite teams, the Detroit Tigers and MSU football and basketball. Kevin was a Tigers season ticket holder for 15 years and enjoyed attending those games with his family and friends. Kevin and his son Aaron visited 22 different MLB stadiums.
Kevin was an avid reader and studier of American history – he was deeply patriotic and proud of his country. Kevin was also profoundly interested in his own ancestry and spent a great deal of time researching and building a large family tree. He was loyal and generous to his family and friends and shared the many blessings he received in his life.
Kevin was a faith filled man, a devout Christian who studied his faith and talked with God regularly. He found comfort in his relationship with God during life’s most challenging times and tried to live his life as a faithful servant of God.
Surviving Kevin is his wife of forty-one years, Mrs. Christine Crimmins Smith of Harrison, one daughter, Caitlin Oates and husband Doug of Ypsilanti, Michigan, one son, Aaron Smith and wife Abby of Erie, Colorado, three grandchildren; Riley Oates, Emmy Smith and Reed Smith, one sister, Patricia Kostrzewa of Saginaw, four sisters- in-law; Jan Smith of Saginaw, Donna Smith of Houghton Lake, Michigan, Kathleen Hammond of Rowlett, Texas and Maureen Crowell and husband Steve of Brighton, Michigan, five brothers- in-law; Dennis Crimmins and wife Jo of Lexington, Michigan, Terry Crimmins and wife Nancy of Woodland Park, Colorado, Brian Crimmins and wife Beth of Holly, Michigan, Kevin Crimmins and wife Christine also of Holly and Marty Crimmins and wife Bernie of Saginaw, plus many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members and numerous friends. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Lavonne Looby and Noreen Trificant, three brothers; Don Smith, Tom Smith and Tim Smith and one sister- in-law, Fran Crimmins.

Thank you Aaron, Caitlin and Christine for sharing your Kevin. Kevin was a leader, a role model and a friend for many years. The Trade and Customs community is poorer for his passing. Many in our generation of professionals owe Kevin a debt of gratitude, as he was always generous w/ his time, guidance and experience. We miss his hand in our work and our careers.
@Aaron & Jon, I only ever order a Perch Sandwich at Jacoby's!

Our prayers are with you all,
