Nicholie “Nicky” Ann Ashcraft 74 of Harrison passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at her home on Friday, May 21, 2021. Nicholie was born September 16, 1946, in Cadillac, Michigan the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. and Dorothy L. (Brown) Ashcraft. Nicky graduated from Harrison High School. She furthered her education with a BS in Education from CMU in 1969, an MS from CMU in 1979. In 1990 Nicky achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural & Extension Education from MSU.
After graduating from High School Nicky married Gary Hoffman and moved to Alma. Nicky had a lifelong love and passion for horses, helping others, and teaching. She first shared that gift as a 1st-grade teacher and a drug and alcohol counselor before realizing her dream of a horse farm, Hi-Land Acres. Nicky gave riding lessons, boarded horses, and was the 4-H leader for Turf & Trail 4-H Club. She furthered her love of leadership for youth and community by accepting the position as Gratiot County 4-H Youth Agent. Nicky then continued her career with a position with Michigan State University Agricultural & Extension Education as Staff Development Specialist. With a move to Athens, Georgia, Nicky worked for the Kellogg Foundation doing research on minority farmworkers in the south. In 1998 Nicky moved to Siesta Key Florida to be closer to her father, Charlie Ashcraft. She was a very active member of the Siesta Key Chapel where she made a huge impact in the mission work of that church. Nicky participated in numerous mission trips to Alaska and Haiti.
Nicky loved her children and grandchildren more than anything. Her amazing love, gentle soul, enveloping warm hugs, and beautiful smiles will be so greatly missed by her family. She made fantastic apple pie and sour milk cookies. Nicky loved horses and continued to ride until recently. Her great Horse loves, Bodega, Lancer, and Wally brought her tremendous joy as did her smaller furry family, Barney, Sophie, and Holly.
Surviving Dr. Ashcraft are her two loving children; Stacey Korycki and husband John of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Jay Hoffman and wife Jamie of Clare, Michigan, five grandchildren; Morgan Hoffman, Sam Korycki, Evan Korycki, Kylee Hoffman, and Alec Hoffman, three great-grandchildren; Miyah Barlow, Dallas Allen, and Harlei Allen, two sisters; Kathleen Ferguson and husband Dave of Harrison and Patricia Comer and husband Matt of Traverse City, Michigan, one brother, Dan Ashcraft and wife Colleen Millard of Harrison, many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, the father of her children, Gary Hoffman and wife Patti of Mason, Michigan, her two fur babies; Holly and Hank as well as her grand pup, Otis. A smile from Nicky was like a hug that filled the room. She was so welcoming, and for the people she was closest to, she loved large. She was brilliantly accomplished, but she was most proud of Stacey and Jay. She will be greatly missed.

Nicky was my cousin and even though we moved from Michigan to Texas when I was just 8, I always enjoyed reconnecting with her family when we would go back on vacations. She and my brother Bill were very close as kids and are now in heaven together sharing old memories I’m sure. Unfortunately they both passed from cancer at the age of 74. I have a great memory of Nicky showing us on one of our visits how she had taught her first horse, Lightening, how to bow. She loved her horses and I was always so jealous that she got to have a horse as I always wanted one so bad. Nicky had a great smile and loved her family dearly and will be missed.

How I enjoyed my talks with Nicky, when she was my sister! She was wise, elegant, and kind. We shared love for our children and celebrated family times. Best of all, I remember her laughter when we told each other stories from our hearts. I loved Nicky.
